THE 30X30 AS YOU’VE NEVER SEEN IT.
In 1979, les Humanoïdes Associés released three square albums destined to remain mythical, a Mœbius, a Druillet, a Caza, all collections of illustrations, a little like what the English of Paper Tiger did, that is to say – say like these “33 rpm-30 cm” discs that were not yet called vinyl.
In addition to its normal edition, the album had a “luxury” version which consisted in putting the same book in a box in the format and adding a numbered-signed portfolio of eight pages.
In terms of build quality, there were a few problems: the Moeb, as far as I remember, was falling apart sheet by sheet, offering a wonderful collection of posters, and when you opened mine you kept the cover in your hands while the interior (very heavy) fell on your feet…. Moreover, without wishing to criticize but with a rich past as a model maker, I detected a number of aberrations, faults of taste and model errors: jostled chronology, commentary from one image attributed to another, false titles, reversed images, etc. Without omitting my own aberrations in the form of questionable images and temperamental comments…
I swallowed my disappointment and moved on – which didn’t stop the album from becoming a “cult”.
Today in 2013, deciding to make a facsimile reproduction of it, I took my head for a while. What to do ? Respect the original, with its flaws, too bad, it’s “historic”, a facsimile is a facsimile, a reproduction, not a reissue… or else revise all that a bit, retouch a little thing by- here, another there… at least correct the model errors.
V.I.T.R.I.O.L.
“Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem”, said the alchemists, or “Visit the interior of the earth by rectifying, you will find the hidden Stone. »
But then, I got caught up in the game. Gradually, I realized that the PDF formula gave me complete freedom as to the number of pages, their layout (no need to save money by respecting an alternation of black or color notebooks), freedom to add or withdrawals, bonuses…
At the same time, it was still a question of redoing the 30×30 and not a new album.
So here it is, almost brand new, with new scans, from the originals or from ektachromes… images that had been minimized which are found in large format… others which had been treated in gray which have returned to their original colors … No revisions or self-censorship on the texts, just a few small remarks in the margin and additions of small “documentary” images.
And then, as a bonus, the container and the contents of the “luxury” version, nothing else, just to respect the frame of the original 30×30 anyway and then because there would be no end to it… (On this period of the 70s, moreover, there is not much missing, in terms of illustrations, a dozen, perhaps… to be found in The Monsters of the Closet 2 )
